Basketball is a fun and rewarding sport, but getting the mechanics of a consistent jump shot right can be a challenge. To improve your shot in just 30 minutes a day, follow these focused drills that emphasize wrist flicks, hand positioning, and muscle memory. With regular practice, you can develop a more accurate and reliable jump shot.
Step 1: Close Range, One-Handed Backboard Shots
- Position: Stand under the basket, side facing the baseline, about 1–4 inches from the rim.
- Form: Use your dominant hand under the ball, aiming for the backboard’s vertical line.
- Action: Focus on wrist flick and follow-through. Make 20 shots from each side of the hoop.
Step 2: Close Range, One-Handed No Backboard Shots
- Position: Stand as in Step 1, but without using the backboard.
- Form: Your dominant arm should form a 90-degree angle, and your wrist should create a high arc towards the hoop.
- Action: Focus on shooting with enough arc to avoid the rim. Make 20 shots from each side.
Step 3: Close Range, Two-Handed Backboard Shots
- Position: Stand under the hoop, facing the backboard.
- Form: Place your dominant hand under the ball and your off-hand at the side.
- Action: Focus on using both hands for balance, flicking your wrist toward the backboard’s square. Make 20 shots from each side.
Step 4: Close Range, Two-Handed No Backboard Shots
- Position: Stand as in Step 3, but without using the backboard.
- Form: Your dominant arm should be in a 90-degree angle, elbow facing the hoop, and the off-hand should simply guide the ball.
- Action: Focus on wrist flick to guide the ball into the hoop. Make 20 shots from each side.
Step 5: Mid-Range Jumpers from Five Spots
- Position: Start at five spots around the hoop.
- Form: Bring the ball to your waist and position it in front of your face. When shooting, ensure the motion starts from your legs, bending and rising to flick your wrist.
- Action: Make 5 shots from each spot around the hoop.
By committing to just 30 minutes of daily practice, you’ll be able to improve your jump shot technique and become a more consistent player. The key is repetition, focus, and gradually working your way out from under the basket to more challenging shots.
